RAKU WORKSHOP

Experience the elemental and unpredictable process of Raku firing in this hands-on one-day workshop with ceramic artist Phil Root.

Raku is a fast, dramatic firing process where glazed work is removed from the kiln at around 1,000°C and placed into combustible material for reduction. As the oxygen is removed, the glazes transform, creating characteristic crackles, smoky surfaces and metallic lustres. Every firing is different, making Raku an exciting process of experimentation and chance.

The workshop is suitable for anyone with a basic understanding of ceramics upwards. You will learn about preparing work for Raku, glaze application, the firing process and reduction techniques, as well as the practical considerations and safety involved.

WHAT TO BRING

Participants should bring their own grogged stoneware work, which must be bisque fired and ready for glazing. Work should be suitable for Raku firing and able to withstand rapid temperature changes.

The Raku kiln is approximately 35cm in diameter × 40cm high, so the aim is to fit multiple pieces into each firing. Please bring work approximately the size of a mug, bowl or small vase, allowing us to fire several pieces together.

If you would like to fire a larger piece(s), please get in touch before booking. Larger work may be possible through additional-cost options or a separate/private firing.

You are welcome to bring several smaller pieces to experiment with different glazes and finishes. If you are unsure whether your work is suitable, please get in touch beforehand.

Glazes, firing and reduction materials are included in the workshop price.

ABOUT THE DAY

The day will begin with an introduction to Raku, including glaze selection, application and preparation for firing. You will then glaze your own work before we fire the kiln together.

The exciting part of the day comes when the work is removed from the red-hot kiln and transferred into reduction containers. You will be able to observe the dramatic transformation of the surfaces as smoke, flame and reduction create the distinctive Raku effects.

There will also be time to discuss the results, clean your finished pieces and consider how you might develop Raku techniques in your own ceramic practice.
